📊 State of the Nation

🇦🇹 ATB Results Generally Positive...Foreigners looking for Austrian Beef

Although the turnover at the ATB convention held in Vienna between the 28.-30.01.1996 was generally positive, the general feeling was expressed that the incoming Australian business needs to react more to the requests of foreign agencies/operators. The most stinging complaint was made concerning the "lederhosen" image being reinforced by the official authorities in this country. Through such narrow-minded actions, potential lucrative markets are being neglected (i.e., adventure travel 🏞️).

❄️ Innsbruck goes for Winter Olympic Gold 2006

The city of Innsbruck is limbering up to make its pitch for the Winter Olympiad, 2006. A plebiscite will be held to determine the support of the Tyroleans for such a project 🏂🎿.

✈️ Russians land in Salzburg Weekly

The first Aeroflot Tupolev 154M arrived in Salzburg on December 23rd filled with Russians looking to go where no snow machine has gone before. Considering the problems Russians have had in receiving Austrian visas, one can only hope that bureaucratic tangles be eliminated and that the flights are a success 🛬🌨️.

🛫 AIR-LINES

🤝 Austrian/Lauda Tandem

Local reports indicate a cooperation starting 01.06. between Austrian and Lauda. The routes in question are Milan, Rome, and Belgrade. Lufthansa (a minority shareholder in Lauda) has blessed the deal. Supposedly, the cooperation will be extended even further into the fall.

Speaking of Lufthansa....

🇪🇺 Lufthansa Stays EU Pure

The word from Brussels is that the European Union is holding up the Lufthansa privatization due to the fear that non-EU interests might obtain a controlling interest. One has to wonder, apart from a stock swap with another European carrier, how the privatization of the German carrier will ever be pushed through.

🛬 Is Eurosky Grounded for Good?

Austria's fourth airline, Eurosky, has become insolvent. Considering there is a fine line between insolvency and bankruptcy, one has to wonder whether cities like Wroclaw, Kosice, and Trieste will ever again be flown to directly from Vienna.

🌐 Agents Away

🚀 Kuoni Jumping on the Bandwagon

Following the lead from Uniglobe, Kuoni has just embarked on a campaign in Austria to establish a franchising presence. The Swiss travel giant has already aligned two candidates (Haschka Tours Ges.m.b.H. and Reisebüro Continental) and is interested in expanding its influence even further. All candidates will be endowed with the privilege of using the Kuoni logo as well as exploiting any mass purchasing advantages involved.

✈️ 50 Austrian/Swissair Agencies and Counting

With the ideal of outsourcing in mind, Austrian Airlines and Swissair have expanded their reach in the local market to 50. Considering all that glitters is certainly not gold, one has to question the stability of such a network when the status of certain "partners" is called into question. One has to view the case involving "Far Away Reisen" (Travel partner losing its IATA licence) to come upon the conclusion that a stable relationship is not built overnight.

💻 Computers in Use

📊 Amadeus Owns 40% of Austria

According to press releases, the Amadeus Computer Reservation System claims to have a 40% market share of all Austrian travel agents. A very strong marketing campaign over the last year by Amadeus has shown its effectiveness in the eastern part of Austria. One has to wonder, however, what kind of inroads Amadeus still can make considering the close cooperation Austrian has with the larger agencies.

🎫 Can Austria Fly Paperless?

Considering that ATB stock still hasn't made it to Austrian agencies yet, it is hard to imagine the implementation of electronic ticketing in the near future. There is talk in Vienna of converting the local airport to a ticketless operation. One wonders how the issues of endorsements and rewrites will be handled. Furthermore, implementation can only take place when all airlines/airports are linked.
